What    We  Believe

Our Statement of Faith

Pulchrum is a Christian arts 501(c)(3) nonprofit rooted in the historic faith of the Church and dedicated to cultivating artistic work oriented towards truth, goodness, and beauty for the glory of God and the sanctification of mankind.

Our Confession of Faith

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, true God of true God; begotten, not made, of one essence with the Father, by whom all things were made.

We believe that same historical Jesus Christ, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man; was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried;

We believe that the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures;
And ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father;
And He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spake by the prophets.
And we believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins.  We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Scripture and the Church

We affirm the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God which, within the bosom of the church, serve as the authoritative guide for the life and faith of the Christian.
We affirm our continuity with the historic Christian faith as it has been received, confessed, and lived by the Church throughout the ages.

Creation, Incarnation, and the Arts

We affirm the goodness, dignity, and beauty of the material world.

Because the eternal Son of God became flesh, we affirm that matter, form, sound, language, icon, and image are capable of sacramentally bearing witness to divine truth and glory. Artistic making, working faithfully with the materials of creation, is therefore a meaningful human participation in God’s creative and redemptive work.

We affirm the long and living Christian tradition of sacred art and imagery, and the role of the arts in worship, devotion, and public witness. The arts may serve as sites of encounter, contemplation, and formation, drawing the human heart toward God. In light of the Incarnation, we affirm the legitimacy and necessity of depicting Jesus Christ in art, acknowledging that the divine may rightly be represented in material form when approached with discernment and prayer.

Christian Art and Artistic Vocation

We affirm that Christian art is not defined by explicit religious content, but by an orientation toward truth, goodness, and beauty in light of Christ.

We affirm that artistic excellence occurs when an artist wrestles with Christ. This understanding of Christ as interlocutor means that the resulting art may include suffering, sin, doubt, and brokenness, as reflected in the life of Christ. No art should therefore be rejected on the grounds of content alone.
We affirm that artists are called not only to artworks, but to undergo their own formation, becoming themselves radiant and glorious images of God.

Beauty

We affirm that beauty is not merely subjective, decorative, utilitarian, but a real and transcendent principle from which all the goodness of the created world flows.

We affirm that beauty is nothing other than the experience of the Glory of God, and that all human creativity finds its meaning and fulfillment in participation in Him.

We reject the reduction of art to commodity, propaganda, or mere utility, whether by Christians or non-Christians, and we affirm instead that encounters with beauty have the potential to transfigure a human, aiding him or her in “partaking of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4)

Mission and Public Witness

We affirm that Pulchrum exists to promote spiritual, moral, and aesthetic flourishing through the arts in a manner consistent with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

We commit to pursuing this mission with integrity, hospitality, and charity, engaging artists and audiences with seriousness, openness, and faithfulness to the Christian vision that animates our work.
